Shares
of Schering-Plough, Merck & Co. Fall On Blow to Cholesterol
Drugs |
March
31, 2008--A panel of doctors at the American College of Cardiology
conference urged patients to try older cholesterol drugs before Vytorin (ezetimibe/simvastatin)
and Zetia (ezetimibe), sending shares of Merck & Co. and
Schering-Plough tumbling. The companies sell Vytorin and Zetia in a joint
venture. Schering shares fell to their lowest point in over 11 years, and
Merck shares fell to their lowest price since July 2006. Study results
released in January found that Vytorin failed to work any better at
reversing heart disease than Zocor (Merck & Co.; simvastatin), which
is now available as a generic. Reuters
