Pfizer's
Pick for CEO Reflects Change in Climate

August 3, 2006--Pfizer's
choice of Jeffrey B. Kindler as its new CEO may be considered
unusual by some. A lawyer who had no pharmaceutical experience
before joining Pfizer as general counsel four years ago, Kindler's
experience doesn't match that of a typical pharmaceutical chief
executive. Yet Pfizer has seemingly taken preemptive action by
choosing Kindler as its leader, in order to face head on the
challenges brought to bear by the industry's changing climate.
Like all large drugmakers, Pfizer will increasingly have to manage
patent disputes, defend itself against lawsuits stemming from
adverse drug reactions, and deal with increased regulations from
the federal government. This mix of legal and regulatory issues is
what may have ultimately tipped the scales in Kindler's favor. BusinessWeek |
