Heparin Mimic
Found in Baxter Product |
March
6, 2008--Heparin sold and
recalled by Baxter International, which has been linked to 19 deaths
and numerous illnesses, contained a possibly counterfeit ingredient.
Tests showed that as much as 20% of the product’s active
ingredient was a heparin mimic combined with the real drug. Heparin
batches associated with illnesses, all of which were produced with
ingredients made in China, were found to contain the contaminant
while batches not linked to illnesses proved to be untainted.
However, it hasn’t been proven that the contaminant is responsible
for the adverse events. The
