Heparin Mimic Found in Baxter Product

March 6, 2008--Heparin sold and recalled by Baxter International, which has been linked to 19 deaths and numerous illnesses, contained a possibly counterfeit ingredient. Tests showed that as much as 20% of the product’s active ingredient was a heparin mimic combined with the real drug. Heparin batches associated with illnesses, all of which were produced with ingredients made in China, were found to contain the contaminant while batches not linked to illnesses proved to be untainted. However, it hasn’t been proven that the contaminant is responsible for the adverse events. The New York Times (Free registration required)
