AstraZeneca Spins
Off Gastrointestinal Unit |
February 14, 2008--AstraZeneca is spinning off its Swedish gastrointestinal
research operations into a new company called Albireo. Backed by a
consortium of investment firms, Albireo will focus on developing new
treatments from a number of early-stage AstraZeneca research
programs on gastrointestinal diseases. AstraZeneca will retain a
significant minority equity stake in Albireo, which raised $27
million in its first financing round. MarketWatch
The
company previously declined to comment on a report that it was discussing the
initial divestment of 4–5 research projects with venture capital
firms as well as with other drug companies. See: AstraZeneca
