Studies: Pfizer’s New Anti-Cancer Drug Sutent Linked to High Blood Pressure

January 2, 2008--Separate studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet link Pfizer’s new anti-cancer drug Sutent (sunitinib) to high blood pressure in cancer patients.

In the NEJM study, researchers reported that Sutent can cause high blood pressure in patients with kidney cancer. Last month, a study published in The Lancet reported that Sutent increased blood pressure and the risk of heart failure among patients with stomach cancer.

Sunitinib’s cancer-fighting benefits may outweigh its cardiovascular risks, as high blood pressure can often be managed. Authors of each study agreed that patients taking sunitinib need to have their blood pressure monitored. U.S. News & World Report
