Bad Cancer Tests Drawing Scrutiny

January 4, 2008--Studies in recent years have shown that certain lab tests widely used to determine which drugs are prescribed for breast-cancer patients are often inaccurate. The tests require pathologists to make judgment calls based on their microscopical examination of tissue. Concern about inconsistent test results among labs could fuel the push for increased oversight of the US lab-testing business. US labs, which are regulated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, currently must pass outside proficiency checks on 83 types of tests; the breast-cancer tests in question are not on this list.
