Amgen’s Anemia Drugs Dealt Fresh Blows With One-Two Punch

January 4, 2008--Two new studies indicate that Amgen’s anemia drugs may increase the risk of death in some patients. In recent years, six studies have found that the drugs (which are erythropoietin-stimulating agents) can lead to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and cancer tumor growth in some patients. The most recent studies may prompt the FDA to further restrict the use of the drugs, which already carry a black-box warning. Los Angeles Times
