Pfizer Seeking to Extend Lipitor Exclusivity To 2016

March 26, 2008--Pfizer filed a suit against Ranbaxy Laboratories, claiming Ranbaxy’s generic Lipitor would infringe two patents covering the process for making Lipitor that do not expire until 2016. Pfizer has asked for a court order that would ban Ranbaxy from making, selling, or importing generic Lipitor until that time. Lipitor (atorvastatin) brought in $12.7 billion in 2007, about 26% of Pfizer's total, but faces generic competition in March 2010. MarketWatch
